Retreat Testimonials

caret-down caret-up caret-left caret-right

I’ve been on two of Debbie’s Costa Rican yoga retreats. Both retreats were life-enhancing, even life-changing.

Before the first retreat, I was a little nervous since I didn’t know anyone else except for Debbie (and one other person from a few yoga classes).

No problem! The retreat was designed, in so many ways, to move through barriers and on to a deeper level of sharing and communication. If you know Debbie, you know already that her yoga classes are intense but also inspirational, even transcendent (especially in the rest after completion of a challenging sequence 😊). We each push ourselves from our own starting point and according to our own limitations.

The retreat has lots of good yoga and then so much more:

  • Excellent, vegetarian meals you can take in a communal dining facility as you get to know others at the retreat.
  • Sessions with various exercises designed to give you a deeper understanding of each other and, most of all, of yourself – who you are and who you want to become.
  • Fun free-time activities (from touring San Jose to zipline tours over the rain forest canopy to bathing in a tropical waterfall) that you can do with others in a group. Or you can opt to spend time alone. (I was able, at the first retreat, to squeeze in two surfing lessons during the free time).
  • The retreat this year was a short 5-minute walk to a charming open-air restaurant/bar which became a frequent destination in late afternoons or later in the evening after all planned activities were done.
  • And then of course are the many exotic signs and sounds of Cost Rica. I loved waking up every morning to a symphony of jungle music! And I found Costa Rican people to be very friendly.

Pura Vida!

Words of William

I have been to several of Debbie’s fabulous retreats!  For the very first Costa Rica retreat, I was new to yoga, and was pursuing stress reduction under medical advice – and it sounded like the perfect thing for that.  Little did I know how eye opening it would be!  For years (decades really), I had been on autopilot.  Doing what it took to provide for the family as the exclusive driving force in my life.  I had reached a turning point, having achieved enough success in life that there was room for much more than just providing.  Debbie’s Realizing Your Dreams framework makes you question all of your life priorities and laser focuses you on making the fundamental changes required to accomplish big changes in your life.

That first trip was in the deep jungle.  I have never seen so much biodiversity in my life, and I’ve spent a lot of time in the woods.  The local troop of howler monkeys visited us every day.  It was a little intimidating to some at first, but everyone quickly acclimated and had a great time!

The second trip was also to Costa Rica, but this time it was a retreat center on the beach, and just a few months after I had completed a grueling 6 months of chemo.  It was a great way to reboot my life, reorient, and reprioritize everything.

My third trip was to Peru, where we hiked the Inca trail, ending at Machu Picchu.  It was an amazing experience, and half of the attendees were folks I knew from the prior two retreats.  This trip was an exotic escape to a very foreign realm.  From the high elevations and physical demands to the ubiquitous Inca ruins and traditions, it was totally different than anything I had experienced before.

My fourth trip was yet another Costa Rica retreat, this time on the Pacific side.  This trip really cemented in the fact that these sorts of retreats only attract the best kind of people.  Good hearts, and great souls!  Once again we were able to bond over the Realizing your Dreams program.  It was the perfect blend of personal growth and vacation.  From casual drinks at a delightful open-air restaurant 5 minutes from the retreat center, to zip lining - the recreation was perfectly balanced with the twice a day yoga and workshops.

Between the passing of my parents and my own bout with cancer, I’ve had a lot to deal with these last few years.  These trips have been instrumental in helping me heal and refocus on making the most of my life.  I can also say that I now have a fantastic friend network of some of the greatest people I have ever met.  I look forward to having them for summer barbeques at my place as soon as the quarantine lifts - I might need a bigger back yard as a result!  I’m totally looking forward to whatever retreats Debbie puts together in the future, see you there!
